National Days in May

In May there are many holidays that we don’t hear about or recognize but they do exist. Yeah sure we all know about Cinco De Mayo on May 5th and we know about Teacher Appreciation Day, and Memorial Day too! But, there are some unusual holidays this month that I’ll let you know about if you don’t know them already.

May 4th was National Star Wars day. This day is more commonly known as “May the FOURTH be with you day” because a major line in the movie is, “May the Force be With You.” On this day you can curl up with blankets and popcorn and binge watch some Star Wars.

May 9th is national Lost Sock Memorial Day. This day is dedicated to that pair of fuzzy Christmas knee high socks you lost when you were 9 years old or that old sock you lost under your bed. If you are celebrating “National Lost Sock Day” on May 9th then May 8th will also be a day you can participate in celebrating. May 8th is “No Sock Day”. If you hate wearing socks and shoes and prefer to be barefoot today is your day.

May 20th is Pick Strawberries Day. If you have been lucky enough to be able to go strawberry picking in the past you will remember how tasty and fun picking strawberries can be! On May 20th celebrate by going to a strawberry field with your family or friends and enjoy the nice hot day while eating… I mean picking…  a bunch of strawberries to take home and make pies, pink lemonade, or just to eat by themselves.

There are wacky holidays every day that just about anyone can participate in. If you are interested in seeing the entire schedule each month you can check .

The iPhone 11

Apple is the richest company in the world, with a net worth of 900 billion dollars, has always managed to convince the world we need their new phone. The newest iPhone X, that came out September of 2017, was to some extent, a failure.

People thought the look of it was immensely appealing, it was far different from their other products, it has the nicest camera possible for a phone, so what did apple do wrong? It was the price; Apple priced the Iphone X at 1000 USD- 1100 USD, depending on how many gigabytes you wanted. Apple expected to sell 29 million iPhones in the first quarter of 2018 of 2018. They reported they sold less than 14 million. When compared to Apple's iPhone 6, which sold 75 million iPhones in its first quarter of being released.

They made their phones way too expensive and unreasonable for its customers. So the question at hand is, what is going to be different about the Iphone 11? Well, the Iphone XI or Iphone 11 is scheduled to come out sometime in November this year; it most likely will be called the iphone XI, but that is not confirmed yet.

According to, the Iphone XI is supposed to sell for 999 British pounds, which an equivalent to 1,354 USD. Apple isn't usually one to have the most drastic changes in their phones. But something amongst the lines of a more powerful camera and different screen is most likely what is going to be the most significant change about it.

Roaring Springs Opening and Jobs

Summer is right around the corner which means people are ready to cool off from the heat already and jump in a pool. Fortunately, the opening weekend for Roaring Springs is this weekend! It will be open from 11 AM to 7 PM on Saturday, May 12 and Sunday, May 13. The park will be open on weekends only until May 28.

If you need a job this summer, Roaring Springs is a perfect place to work! It is always busy and there are many things you can apply for. If you are 16 years old, you can apply to be a lifeguard and monitor the pools and attractions. You do not need experience for this, but you will have to have a Ellis and Associates Lifeguard Certification, and Roaring Springs will provide the course for a fee. If you are not 16 or do not want to be a lifeguard, you can work with the food and drinks. If you work in a restaurant or food cart you will be involved with preparing and serving the food, cleanup, and cashiering. You could also be a cabana server and take orders and serve food to people who reserve a cabana for a day, and possibly checking guests into their cabana and checking on them throughout the day. You can apply for a position in Park Services, and will be responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of the park. That includes dining areas and deck. Another job in the “cleaning” category is Pressure Washing. You will have to pressure wash the park from 6 AM to opening, which is usually at 10 or 11 in the morning. Last but not least, you can be on the Admission Team, which requires you to stand at the entrance and greet guests and either sell tickets, check bags, or control the entrance and exit of the park.

If any of these jobs interest you, go to Roaring Springs Waterpark’s website and scroll to the bottom. The “Jobs” tab is the first one in the dark blue background, and yellow text. There is an application you will need to print out and an address underneath the “How to Apply” title at the bottom.

Equal Education in Schools Across America

Imagine yourself as a young child being told since they were young that they are just as important as each and every one of us. You thrive in your society, schools, and family believing that you can do anything. Now imagine that as you grow older, you become limited to the things you are allowed to do and participate in because of who you are, where you come from, or what you look like. You are told you are less because of the things you can’t change and that you will never amount to much more than the dirt under the feet of those who are supposedly better than you. Students across America are experiencing these exact tragedies as teachers and classmates alike are degrading a select group of individuals who aren’t as smart as the girl next to them, who have African American or Indian ancestry, who come from a family who can’t afford the simplest of materials, and much more. The problem has grown to an improbable size, and will continue to cause issues in the future if not taken care of now. Each and every person deserves the chance at an education equal to that of everyone else, no matter who they are or where they come from. With the help from you, the students’ futures across America will divert the path of poverty and pain to the journey of success and prosperity.

Schools across the nation have neglected the constitutional right of an equal education for certain students, whether it be by a teacher, student, or the administration. Whether it be handing out awards or grading a test, students’ successes are limited because of personal biases within the school. Without people standing up to this urgent issue, students will continue to be discriminated and removed as an accepted member of society. If everything you have known and learned was taken away from you, your identity and who you are would be as well. You’d know nothing, have nothing, be nothing. Our education and the things we are taught throughout our life are the building blocks to the person we are and how our life will play out. The more we know, the better person we will be. Students who do not receive an equal education due to variables out of their control are losing pieces of themselves that could find the cure for cancer or invent the time machine. Keeping students from having the same education as the next student is keeping them from being successful, and you not doing anything about the issue is aiding the the unsuccessfulness of said students. So stand up, and use that voice of yours; speak for the people who can’t. Help all students gain the knowledge and education they deserve. Take a moment and educate the people around you, join an online petition, talk to some teachers and gather their opinions about the situation, make a change in the lives of students who are experiencing the discrimination. One action can change the life of a student like you and me.

Mother's Day Gifts

Mother’s Day is coming up this Sunday and many people may have no idea what to get for their moms! You might not be on great terms with your mom but she still gave you life and she, along with other moms, deserve a little something for that, even if it’s only one day a year. You can also give a gift to your aunt who has children or your grandma, since they are mothers in your life.

Mother’s Day was first celebrated in 1908, when founder and social activist Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her peacemaking mother. It was then in 1914 that former President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation making the second Sunday in May the national holiday, Mother’s Day, after many states in the United States of America had starting celebrating the holiday a few years before.

To celebrate this year, you can buy your mom the traditional and cheesy flowers and card or chocolate. You can also buy tickets to a movie she would like to see that is in the theaters right now, or if it isn’t buy her the movie as a DVD itself. Another great gift idea is a gift card for Amazon or her favorite clothing store, again, it doesn’t have to be a lot. Every mom could even use a spa day, so a prepaid appointment at a good spa is fantastic if you want to go all out. But if you can’t afford any of this, a full day of house cleaning not done by her is always great! Your mom deserves something this Sunday, even if it’s the least, like spending time with her in a way she will enjoy. She will definitely appreciate it.
