The Echo is a Kuna High School news publication, focused on getting current news that happens in and around Kuna High School. We update our newspaper and articles every month, so look for breaking news, events, and learn what is happening around KHS and the community we share. We are very excited to be reporting the news this year and we thank you for checking out our newspaper!
The FFA is a national organization that spreads from the coasts of Maine clear over to the tropical state of Hawaii. It’s establishment was based on the need and importance of agriculturists in today’s society and its main goal had been to successfully encourage students from a path they may not truly have passion and love for to one of where they will flourish and thrive in. However, the objectives of the organization have changed from wanted to recruit students into the agricultural business to changing the lives of each individual and assist them in finding the perfect path for them. Naturally, the group is agriculture based and mainly focuses on anything relating to the industry - i.e. livestock, technology, landscape, forestry, etc - but within the community people find friends, family, leadership skills, and many necessary characteristics that will ultimately benefit every single person in their futures.
Monday, April 30th, 2018 at 6:30 p.m. is the Kuna FFA Chapters annual award banquet and officer reveal. The event is a time where members are recognized for their intense efforts, scholarships are given to the graduating seniors, sponsors, and parents who have sacrificed and given so much to make the organization possible are properly acknowledged, and the FFA officers for the upcoming year are announced along with the retirement of those currently serving. With special thanks to Enrique’s for providing an incredible dinner, the occasion brings community members together and allows for the opportunity for people to begin to understand what the FFA organization is truly about and if it’s the club for them.
Imagine you, or someone you care deeply about, develops a terminal illness which they likely will never heal from. It takes every piece of sanity you have to digest the news, and then all that rationality diminishes, leaving you broken. You make every attempt to improve the life for yourself or that person who has the disease, but sometimes the one wish they want can never come true and you despise yourself for being incapable of giving them the thing they want most. Brenda Lombardi was one of these people. Brenda is the mother of Peter Lombardi, who, when he was only the mere age of nine years old, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. It wasn’t long until a representative from the Make-A-Wish foundation made a visit to Peter’s hospital room, asking for his wish.
Peter Lombardi wished for the man in white to kiss him like he was kissing all the other children, and according to CNN news, his mother Brenda responded, “Pete, your wish is to get a kiss from Pope Francis?” The Make-A-Wish foundation did not have the ability to grant Peter’s wish, and instead granted his second wish: a lightsaber fight with Darth Vader.
In June 2017, Peter began to heal from his cancer, and as celebration, his parents took him and his three siblings to Italy. They had never imagined that they’d have an encounter with the Pope, and even be recognized by the holy figure, but that is exactly what happened.
Long story short, Brenda Lombardi met a man while on their trip named Butorac, who was friends with a woman, who was married to one of the Swiss Guards (the guards who are in charge of the safety of the Pope). The woman took Peter and his family to meet the Swiss Guards, and helped in attracting the attention of the Pope as well as lifted Peter when the man went by. As he did, one of the guards lifted Peter and the Pope kissed him on the forehead, as well as let the boy ride in the cart with him, granting Peter’s greatest wish, that he had come to believe wouldn’t come true.
When you watch the news and see what is going on around the world you see things like war, politics, weather, and sports. There’s a lot more on the news that goes unnoticed and sometimes it can be pretty interesting!
There are funny stories like in Alameda County in California, a mouse was seen doing a “Ride-along” on a sheriff's deputy windshield. The mouse was sitting right in the windshield and stayed there for a couple miles before the cops noticed him. The mouse was safe and had the time of his life!
There are also interesting stories that can be quite sad. At an airport in Maryland a women was flying home with Spirit Airlines. She had called a few days in advance to make sure it was okay to bring her emotional support hamster on the ride with her to Florida twice and they approved this both times. When she was boarding her plane they stopped her and told her she could not bring her hamster onto the plane with her. Ms Aldecocea claims the airline representatives suggested she “flush it down the toilet at the terminal”. She flushed the hamster "She was scared, I was scared, it was horrifying trying to put her in the toilet," she told the Miami Herald. "I was emotional, I was crying. I sat there for a good 10 minutes crying in the stall. I didn't have any other options. She was so loving. It was like she knew I needed somebody”. However, Spirit Airlines denies saying that she should flush it.
In Kenya, there was a mixup and four surgeons mixed up two patients tags and took the wrong one into surgery. The surgery was to remove a tumor in the patient’s brain. The surgeon's did not realize they were operating on the wrong patient until two hours of searching for a tumor that wasn’t there. The patient survived and is in good condition but as for the surgeons "The management has suspended the admission rights of a neurosurgery registrar” said Dr Kronos.
A lot of things happen in the world that we don’t hear about. We only hear about the devastating things such as war and crime. We also hear about politics and weather. The news can be interesting and sometimes hearing odd stories such as the “Mouse Ride-a-long” can be a good thing. We are all so caught up in the negative parts of life that we don’t realize there are brighter sides.
Spring break is coming upon us this month. Most of us may have plans while others may have no clue what to do. Well if you have no clue I’ve got a few for you! During spring break this year down in Moab, the Easter Jeep Safari is going on. It is a huge event that happens every year; you do have to sign up in advance because this is a very big event. Eastern Jeep Safari is an event that takes place in Moab, Utah and it’s where all of the jeepers go down for a week and just go 4 wheeling. During spring break you can always grab a couple of friends and head down to Indian creek and float for the day. You can also always do the classic and have a sleepover with your friends and throw a party! Sometimes your parents may have already made plans for you, but if you don’t want to go you can always just suck it up and go with because you never know, you might have a little fun.
Poetry is an unsurpassable embodiment of both expression and enlightenment. It supplies people with the opportunity to convey their unexplainable thoughts through the simplistic stroke of a pen onto paper, and gives many a way to tell their story in a situation where they may never receive the chance. The lyrical tale is by far more than art, but a language in itself connecting to each individual soul in a variety of ways. Many use it as an escape, but I say it’s an entrance into a different universe all together; where society’s limitations are defiable and anything is attainable. The craft is used everywhere, everyday whether people realize it or not. It’s found in the kind-hearted act of helping someone with their groceries and in the cruel, vicious storms the East experiences day after day. Poetry is not merely rhyming word after word but the act of creating a spiel with every letter written.
Because of how important poetry is to our everyday lives, the KHS newspaper is putting on a poetry contest for all Kuna High School students. This competition will give students the chance to get their talent recognized and express the way they feel without judgement. Students can submit up to two original poems of any style, length, topic, and it could have been written at any time.
Submissions will no longer be accepted after March 21st, 2018, so be sure to hurry!
Any student interested in participating in the contest please click the link below. Information and rules are included in the submission form description:

As the semester is nearly over, students are getting anxieties about grades and how to get them up last minute. If you are facing summer school here are a few tips to get out of it before the school year ends.
Here at Kuna High, a lot of students have to go to summer school because of attendance. If this is the case for you, there are things you can do to get your credits back. First, you are going to have to write a letter of appeal. In this letter explain which class you want to appeal for and the reasons why you missed too many class periods. Turn this letter into the office and if it is approved you can go to Saturday school to make up hours to get your credits back and avoid summer school.
Another reason kids get summer school is for the more obvious reason that they failed one class or more. If this is the case, stop the problem before it is too late. Get a tutor, help from a teacher, help from friends or other students. You could even ask your teachers for extra credit homework or if there are any ways to get your grade up. Make sure to also turn in all missing assignments and ask to redo the ones you did poorly on. There are always options you just have to put in effort to get the work done and try your hardest to get it done before the semester ends. Using things such as a task to-do list, organizer, and set reminders on your phone to do your homework would also help you out.
At Kuna High there are a lot of options you can choose from to save yourself from summer school. If you stay aware of your grades by checking them often on Schoology, you will be more likely to try harder to get them up. If you realize you're losing credits due to absences then you will put forth effort to get to school on time and all day long.
Summer School can be a drag. You should be outside and hanging out with friends, maybe even go on a few vacations. Summer is also the perfect time to get a part time job. Don’t waste your summer having to go to summer school if there is a chance you can get out of it and learn the material beforehand. If it is not too late try these tips to help shimmy your way out of summer school!
March 10th is the first track meet in Kuna don't miss it!
Overcrowding at Kuna High School has been a problem for many years. The school has over 1,400 students, and it was only built for 1,200. With the immense student body consistently getting bigger each year, many problems have been arising, including limited parking. While for years, the parking lot has been a problem, this year, a solution was formed: parking passes.
